In the eleventh episode of the "All Day Research" podcast we welcome two guests this time, Tim Hansmeier and Thilo von Neumann. Both have recently completed their Master's degree and now talk to our host Lukas Ostermann about their aspired academic career at Paderborn University.
Tim Hansmeier held various positions within the institute during his studies. For example, he worked as a tutor during his bachelor's degree and later on as a student assistant. "These activities have helped me enormously in finding out which topics interest me and where I would like to do further research later on. Especially when it also comes to finding a suitable topic for the final thesis, it naturally helps a lot if you already know the field a bit better," explains Tim Hansmeier. In general, he can recommend anyone interested to simply get in touch with the relevant contact person: "Don't be shy and just ask. A thesis in the respective area is of course the easiest way to be introduced to a topic, but you can always just approach the people like that!".
Our second guest Thilo von Neumann was awarded the faculty prize for his master's thesis on source separation and speech recognition. Currently, he continues to work in the Department of Communications Engineering as a research assistant. "In my field, I focus mainly on source separation, i.e., the separation of simultaneously speaking speakers," says Thilo von Neumann. His field of work mainly incorporates topics from electrical engineering and computer science. "I can recommend anyone who is interested in this field to also choose some seminars from electrical engineering already in the course of their studies. This gives you a very good insight into this field," recommends Thilo von Neumann.
The podcast was produced in collaboration with the Institute of Computer Science and the Computer Science Student Council. The aim is to give more insights into science and thereby bring students - especially those in the first semester - closer to the study, to arouse interest and to show how much fun research and the study of computer science at Paderborn University can be.
