Fields medal winner visits Paderborn University

 |  EIM-Nachrichten

This year's Weierstrass Lecture will be held by Prof. Dr. Alessio Figalli from ETH Zurich on the topic "Beyond Boundaries: Recent Advances in the Obstacle Problem". Figalli was awarded the Fields Medal in 2018. It is the highest award in the field of mathematics and has a reputation comparable to that of the Nobel Prize, which does not exist in this discipline.

Anyone interested is cordially invited to attend the event on Friday, April 26, at 4 p.m. in lecture hall O1.

The series of events organized by our Institute of Mathematics is named after Karl Weierstrass, who graduated from Paderborn's Gymnasium Theodorianum in 1834 as the best graduate. Weierstrass is one of the most important mathematicians of the 19th century and is considered the founder of modern analysis, among other things.

The lecture, which has been held annually since 2011, consists of a ceremonial lecture and an introductory historical lecture. This year, the latter will be given by Prof. Dr. Tilman Sauer from Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz on the topic of "Einstein and pure compass geometry".
