The Presidential Board of Paderborn University has awarded five doctoral scholarships and one postdoctoral scholarship. At this year's Research Day, Prof Dr Johannes Blömer, Vice President for Research and Early Career Researchers, presented the researchers with their certificates and warmly congratulated them on their achievement: "Every year, the Research Commission selects the scholarship holders and each time it is a difficult process with so many good applications. But you have prevailed, we have selected you and I wish you every success with your projects." The Research Day at the university offered groundbreaking insights into the world of science and enabled interdisciplinary dialogue on current research topics.
Broad range of research specialisations
A doctoral scholarship in the field of gender research has been awarded to Stine Malin Dyck, Faculty of Arts and Humanities, who is conducting an interdisciplinary study on the linguistic constitution of gender in children's and young adult literature. The funding period is three years. Patrick Makal, Faculty of Arts and Humanities, and Daniel Matthias Fröhlich, Faculty of Computer Science, Electrical Engineering and Mathematics, have been awarded full scholarships, also for a period of three years. Makal is researching the topic of "Capitalism as a symbolic form" with a focus on the philosophy of Ernst Cassirer, while Fröhlich is working on "Path integral methods for ultraviolet-renormalised quantum systems".
Usman Ali and Anke Schoch, both from the Faculty of Science, will receive two graduation scholarships. Physicist Ali will receive a six-month grant to conduct research on the topic of "Super-Bloch oscillations in modulated parabolic optical lattices". Schoch, a chemist, has been awarded a twelve-month grant and is focussing on sustainable, iron-based hydrogen storage materials. As part of her research, she is investigating their storage capacity and long-term stability using X-ray spectroscopy. All five scholarship holders will receive a monthly grant of 2,000 euros.
This year's 18-month postdoctoral fellowship goes to Dr Noëlle Rohde, Faculty of Science. Her research topic is: "Quantification of athletes in elite sport and its consequences". She will receive a monthly grant of 2,400 euros. The aim of the scholarship is to enable talented scientists to pursue a successful career in research and teaching after completing their doctorate.
After receiving their certificates, the doctoral and postdoctoral scholarship holders spoke about their research projects, challenges and future plans in a round table discussion. Dr Alexandra Wiebke, Head of the Academic Career Development Unit and Managing Director of the Jenny Aloni Centre for Early Career Researchers, moderated the discussion. Vice President Blömer emphasised: "With the Research Day, we want to bring together researchers from all career stages here at Paderborn University and promote interdisciplinary exchange."
