On August 20, 2023, Prof. Kai-Uwe Schmidt, the permanent representative of the Dean and Dean of Studies of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Computer Science and Mathematics, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly. We have lost a highly esteemed colleague and wonderful person, who incredibly enriched Paderborn University and his department with his friendliness, competence, helpfulness, calm manner and cheerfulness.
He made outstanding mathematical achievements and significant contributions to problems in coding and design theory, finite geometry, extremal theory for sequences and polynomials, and cryptography. He combined a variety of combinatorial, algebraic, analytic and probabilistic methods in an innovative way. His work has been internationally recognized with two medals from the Institute of Combinatorics and its Applications, describing it as "brilliant", "extremely important" and "elegant".
His highly motivating and outstanding lectures and technical presentations will remain in our memories forever. We will miss Mr. Schmidt very much and remember him with respect and great gratitude.
