Mr. Dr. Nelius is awarded for his lectures “Mathematik III für Informatiker” and “Mathematik am Computer” during ws 1989/99 and “Algebra für Informatiker” during ss 1999. In the seminar feedback you can find following remarks of the students.

Mathe III:

• By far the best lecturer until today.

Mathe am Computer:

• Mr Nelius explains very good, other lecturers can take a leaf out of his book.
• Very comprehensible style.... he is most certainly a candidate for the Weierstraß-Prize.

Algebra für Informatiker:

• My best lecturer by far. (Similar comments by five other students.)
• The lecturer knows how to convey the complicity of algebra in a comprehensible manner.
• Nelius is the best lecturer to me.
• The lecture is very well structured; the graphics are excellent, only these are 2. features  worth mentioning. Furthermore, the lecture may be complicated but you can tell, that the lecturer lays importance to treat the students in a fair manner and won´t experience disadvantages. In conclusion: Most certainly, the best lecturer that I have had during my student’s life.
• Very good, clearly arranged lecture, mediated understandable (Which is rare). You always have the feeling that Nelius takes care of his students.
• The lectures are well structured and illustrated clearly! The lecturer is very sure, competent and well prepared.
• Nelius is the best lecturer I have ever had. Nobody has more to offer didactically and he conveys the subject matters well structured (In all lectures:Mathe I +II+III and IV)!Nelius for Weierstraß-Prize!
• The lecturer deserves the prize because he gives a very good lecture. He expresses himself very clear and gives many examples for the topic.
• He absolutely deserves the prize because he can convey complicated topics very good; he always has time for student´s questions. By far the best professor!

These views show great effect in the statistic evaluations of the seminar feedback. In this connection, it is to be recognized that it is not easy for lecturers in mathematics to arouse student’s enthusiasm for computer science during the service lectures. The students appreciate, that the topics of the lectures are mediated in such an excellent manner.

Due to his successful commitment during his “partly” complicated lectures, the Weierstraß-Prize is well deserved.

Mr. Dr. Pfahler is awarded for his, in the previous year well-evaluated tutorials for the lecture “Grundlagen der Programmiersprachen”. 

His ability to mediate complicated subjects in a clear and patient manner is especially praised. He offered special exercise groups for women in the software development, to fulfil the wish to especially motivate women during the undergraduate studies. Furthermore, Mr Pfahler was committed to other subjects and prepared and read the relatively “unpopular” programming lectures for Chemistry and Physics. Especially highlighted should be, his commitment for excellent teaching in the department, which organises “Didaktik-Workshops” for new (and experienced) exercise group trainers on a voluntary basis. It´s due to him, that in the department exercise group trainers have the possibility to learn and train the organisation of study groups in a didactic reasonable manner.

The Weierstraß - Commission, chose the awardees on the 9th November 1999. This year's commission consisted of Prof. Schäfer, Mr Effert as substitute for the department student council and Prof. Von zur Gathen. The award ceremony took place on the 11th February 2000 during the “Tag der Informatik” (Day of Computer Science).
